Taking Inspiration from Claude Monet

After deciding to incorporate the natural world into my design, the artist I immediately looked at for inspiration was Claude Monet, as he is renowned for his paintings of the different elements of nature including scenic landscapes and the effects of weather with a focus on colour.

As I was quite set on incorporating ice and snow into my design, as well as the rose, I looked at his work that incorporated snow and flowers, looking at his use of colour, brush marks and setting.

I decided to concentrate on Monet’s Haystacks series, which is made up of twenty five canvas paintings in an impressionist style, focusing on the differences in perception of light across various times of day, different seasons and types of weather.

Eight of the twenty five images depicted the effects of snow, ice and frost and incorporated a variation of different tones depending on the time of day including yellow, pink and blue tones. These images include ‘Grainstacks. Snow Effects; Sunlight’ 1890-91, ‘Grainstacks. White Frost Effect’ 1889, ‘Grainstacks. Snow Effect’ 1890-91 and ‘Wheatstack. Sunset, Snow Effect’ 1890-91.

The image that included more pink tones depicted the effects of snow in sunlight, which seemed apt for linking my final piece together, as flowers need sunlight to grow and survive.
