Snow/Ice Characters in TV and Film

As I knew I wanted to represent a theme of snow and ice into a female character, I decided to collect inspiration from various snow/ice themed characters represented in different film and TV productions.

I will be looking at the style of makeup, products used, hair styling, colours, textures, cstume and character traits.

The Chronicals of Narnia (2005)
Director- Andrew Adamson
Hair and makeup designer- Nikki Gooley
The hair and makeup for the White Witch is very minimal, which gives a cold and clinical feel to the look. The lack of makeup also adds a sense of seriousness to the character, as does the dreadlocked hair, which makes the character seem more at one with nature. She also wears pure white and her headdress features icicles, adding to the cold feel and natural vibe.

The Snow Queen (1966)
Director- Gennadiy Kazanskiy
Similarly to the White Witch, the Snow Queen character is portrayed with the use of icicle props and the use of the colour white. However, the character is more glamorous and wears a full face of makeup. Large black lashes are teamed with pale base makeup and blue eye shadow. The use of the colour blue is used to add an icy feel.

The Snow Queen (2002)
Director- David Wu
Makeup designer- Connie Parker
The makeup for this adaptation of the Snow Queen shows similarities to the usual white theme connected with representing snow and ice in a character. The makeup is minimal and blue is used in the form of contact lenses to make her character seem icy cold.

The Huntsman: Winters War (2016)
Director- Cedric Nicholas-Troyan
Makeup designer- Vincenzo Mastrantonio
Unlike the previous character makeups, the colour silver is used widely to represent the Ice Queen in this film. It looks like silver sequins have been used to create the appearance of metal to the headdress and clothing, which adds a different kind of cold feel to the look. The makeup and hair are also minimal.

The Snow Queen TV Series (2005)
Director- Julian Gibbs
Makeup department head- Rachel Affolter
The makeup used to portray this character is the darkest of them all. Dark eye makeup and eyebrows as well as deep purple lips contrast against the pale skin. Rather than using ice blue tones to represent the coldness, I think deep purples have been used to denote an evilness in the character.

After looking at the different representations of ice/snow characters in film, I have decided that I want to use a bit more colour in my makeup, as I want the character to seem glamorous, feminine and powerful, as I am incorporating roses into the ice design too. I will leave the hair down to add to the simple yet feminine look and incorporate white tones into the costume. I will also use icicle props within the costume, as I thought the icicle headdress fashioned by the White Witch character in the Chronicals of Narnia gave an elegant get powerful/dangerous feel to the character.
