London and New York SS15 Hair and Makeup Looks

Although my research focuses on London and New York fashion week, there are many key hair and makeup looks trending throughout Milan and Paris as well. The key makeup looks featured included natural barely there makeup, flashes of colour on the eyes, strong brows and bold lips. Hair designs included intricate braids and loose tousled hair. My favourite makeup was created by Wendy Rowe for Burberry. This look was all about perfect honey skin and a bold ruby lip, created using Burberry lip cover Ruby No. 18. Christopher Bailey’s collection used insects and the colours of nature. This is reflected in the honey skin tones and clean makeup around the eyes. Wendy Rowe used Fresh Glow. Brow’s were filled in while lashes were left untouched  for a modern feel. Hair, by Neil Moodie was tousled and tucked into the collar. The tousled hair complemented the clean makeup while stopping the look being too edgy and reflecting the naturalistic feel that was also defined in the apparel. Ostrich feathers and shades of grass green, along with wasp- waist jackets and wasp motif's gave a true feeling of a bright summer. The hair and makeup designs accentuated the bright summer vibe and kept the look fresh. I liked this makeup the most as it looked beautiful and flawless all round, from the base, to the brows and lips. Flawless makeup is what inspires me to work in the makeup industry. I recreated this look, which was similar to Dolce and Gabanna’s makeup look for SS15.

This look was all about the lip! I used a mixture on matte and sheer lipsticks, which causes a 3D effect, to make my lips really stand out. Teaming my lips with a heavier brow evened out this makeup look.

Matthew Williamson and J JS Lee were among designers who used colour on the eyes. Charlotte Tilbury and Lisa Potter-Dixon (head makeup and trend artist for Benefit) designed the makeup for Matthew Williams, inspired by the hibiscus flower.The eye makeup was created by mixing hydra-smooth lip colours in ‘fling thing’ and ‘dare me’ and patting them onto the eyelids, then applying cream eye shadow in ‘always a bridesmaid’ in the centre, inner corner and lower lash line. The colours used fit the flower theme and complemented the various purple hues. The entire look was very feminine and beautiful.

Vera Wang also featured model's with beautiful purples hues on the eyes. Lucia Pieroni created a plum smokey eye. Paul Hanlon created two messy plaits at the nape of the neck with the rest of the hair worn loose. the makeup was worn beautifully against the black collection and the purple hues added femininity. it portrayed a cool summer night and was one of my favorite collection from SS15 Fashion Week.  If i were to recreate this smokey eye, i would use the eye shadow shade egg plant from the Ben Nye Glam Shadow palette.

J JS Lee’s makeup look featured navy and blue eyeliners. This look was created by Lucy Burt for Mac. The hair was kept simple and clean. It was styled by Halley Brisker, who lead the team. The overall look was very clean and cool, helped by the navy blue tones and sleek hair.

 Blue hues on the eyes were also popular with Fendi and Elie Saab. Here is my take on the Elie Saab eye makeup.     

I used navy and teal eye pencils to re-create this look. 

                     

Also inspired by the colours of the sea was Ryan Lo. The models for SS15 were reminiscent of mermaids. Starfish and shells made perfect air accessories. Hair stylists at Ryan Lo plaited the hair before heating with straighteners, for a subtle wave. This techniques is ideal for fashion week as it is quick and easy to achieve. Makeup by Mathias Van Hooff complimented the mermaid inspired look, using pastel shades and glitter!

The hair and makeup for Ryan Lo works so well to compliment clothes. The soft textured materials in pastel tones are accolade by the soft pastel tones used on the eyes and lips, while the glitter adds the fun and girlishness associated with mermaids.

Bold brows dominate New York Fashion Week for SS15. Bold eyebrows were featured by Victoria Beckham, Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs. Conversely, Victoria Beckham teamed the bold brows with sleek parted hair while Marc Jacobs opted for a Bjork style Mohawk. All three designers opted for a barely-there makeup look.

The hair and makeup designed for Victoria Beckham's SS15 show complemented the beautiful tailoring. They were both as clean as the clothing and also as wearable. The hair in particular (created by Guido Palau) complemented the clothing perfectly- The side parting was expressive of the tailoring, while it being left loose reflected the flowing fabrics that were used. If the clothing was more structured and fitted, I would have kept the hair parted to the side but styled the hair into a tight bun to reflect a tight fitted structure.

The bronzed makeup for Michael Kors, designed by Dick Page, was enhanced by the brown liner used on the eyes and clear lips. To complement this soft makeup look, Orlando Pita styled the hair into messy textured plaits with hair falling onto the face. This kept the overall look soft and warm. All of these elements, alongside the sporty apparel and crisp whites created a feeling of being outdoors in spring. The bronzed makeup and tousled hair give the impression of being outside in the sun all day. The sporty bright colours and nautical stripes also accentuate this. If I were to re-create this makeup, I would use Mac Face and Body to keep the makeup looking natural and enable any freckles to show through to emphasize the summer look. I would also apply bronzer to the areas of the face where the sun hits, such as the nose and cheekbones so the skin looked naturally sun-kissed.

'Night-club style' beauty was the inspiration behind the makeup designed for Marc by Marc Jacobs. Makeup designer Diane Kendal used sheer lip gloss on the cheekbones and sheer metallic cream eye shadow on the lids to create the appearance of a sweaty glow. The night club style hair, by Guido Palau fit the English rave brief as the twisted mohawks were rebellious and youthful. Latex (supplied by House of Harlot), baggy sweat tops and messy mohawks evoked the English rave culture. If I were re-creating this look for a photo shoot, Vaseline would have worked perfectly to create the sweaty glow. However, as Vaseline breaks down makeup, I would have used a clear gloss and then spritzed the face with Ben Nye's Liquiset to keep the makeup in place.
