Autumn/ Winter 2014 Hair and Makeup Trends

Eye's were the main focus for Autumn/ Winter 2014 Fashion Week. Colour and emphasis on eye shape and size were popular with Marc Jacobs, Alexander Mcqueen and Rochas while Christian Dior and Jonathan Saunders exaggerated eye shape using dramatic colours. Lips were kept bare with all of these dramatic eye makeup looks.

Pat McGrath self designed the feather lashes for Alexander McQueen and applied them individually to the eye lid and brow. She used silver and gold pigment to create a sculpted eye shape.

Lucia Pieroni used Mac pigment in Vanilla to highlight key areas and applied MAC Pigment in Orange and Paint Stick in White to create the soft pink shading around the eyes. The red lip stain completed this look.

Giles adapted a classic smokey eye with blue tones. Lucia Pieroni used a mixture of Cyan and Technakhol coloured eyeliners to create this look. The nude lip allowed the eye to pop.

Thomas Tait featured super hero style mask shapes on the models eyes, created by Thomas de Kluyver. He used flat bold colours to add a pop art feel.

Rochas full lash look was created by Lucia Pieroni, using three sets of lashes layered on top of one another.

Marc Jacobs makeup had the least detail of all but the most dramatic effect. Key artist Francois Noir brought attention to the eye by bleaching eyebrows and applying a graphic line to the eye crease. This made the eye area appear larger and look quite alien.

Dior's graphic eyes were designed by Pat McGrath and created using latex paint, pigments, glitter and coloured mascara.

Guido Palau designed the hair for Alexander McQueen's Autumn/ Winter 14 show. For the male models he entwined crows feathers into matted hair, reminiscent of pagen mythology. Guido says of his design, “I wasn't too worried about the shape of the hair, I just wanted a great texture. The overall idea was to look quite dark and almost dirty. I didn't want the feathers to be misconstrued as pretty.” He took inspiration from Adam Ant and Edward Scissorhands. Makeup artist Miranda Joyce used Mac Typographic eye shadow, inspired by a picture of Brian Eno.

For the female models, Pat McGrath designed feathered lashes and brows and alien like highlighting and contouring around the eyes using copper metallic shadows. The theme was "wild beauty". Mac pigments would work to re-create this look, as they are so pigmented and come in an array of different metallic shades. Guido Palau created spiraled cornrows, leaving two strands to frame the face. This added to the futuristic and wild theme but the whole hair and makeup design was kept beautiful with the intricate designs.

The black feathered eyebrows complemented the goat fur hoods, while the futuristic makeup integrated well with the sharp tailoring.

Victoria Hunter created the wig shades for this tonal look. She described the colour as “a dusty, vintage, mushroom-y pink with a little bit of violet behind it.” Each piece of hair was tailored to create a monochromatic look, alongside Guido Palau. He looked at makeup swatches and how they ran from pale to pink for inspiration as well as pictures of the acress Jessica Lange and fashion editor Polly Mellen.

Makeup artist Francois Nars used beige, grey and camel tones, saying " there are a lot of powdery colors and silks in the show". He used an array of Nars eye shadows, blushers and glosses.

The hair and makeup accentuated the aparrel and took the look to another level. I think the use of colour within the hair and makeup gave the tonal theme more power and gave more of an impact. As some people may find the tones quite dull, the structured hair and makeup effects to make the eyes buldge made the women quite intimidating despite the lack of character in the clothing.
