The first issue of
Vogue was released as a weekly magazine in December 1892, with the intention of
attracting “the sage as well as the debutante, men of affairs as well as the
belle”- Founding publisher Arthur Baldwin
Turnure. Over its 121 years in print, Vogue magazine has adapted to the
many changes in technology and cultures, creating infamous covers ranging from
the first colour cover shot by Edward Steichen in July 1932, British Vogue
featuring their first black model Donyale Luna on the cover of the June 1966
edition and Sophia Loren being one of the first celebrities to grace the cover
in 1961.
British Vogue was founded during the First World War by Mr Conde Nast and was published in London in September 1916 after shipping restrictions disallowed for American Vogue to be imported.

Vogue is published in
over 20 Countries and includes a teen magazine as well as Men’s Vogue. Catering
for women, children and men, enables the classic Vogue style to be shared
amongst different cultures, sexes and ages. However, although Vogue has followed
the change in times by featuring celebrity’s and reality stars becoming the new
fashion icons on their covers, I think it has kept its classic high fashion
style and still only caters for those with a real passion for high end fashion
labels or those with the money to spend. Vogue's features often include on trend fashion pieces ranging from clothing and accessories to must have makeup and nail colours as well as fashions for city breaks or holiday's abroad and health and beauty advice. The articles in the January 2015 UK edition of Vogue include the facts and benefits of women freezing their eggs, dressing aptly for your chosen career and neat cut tailored fashion pieces. All of the articles listed above cater to a more mature female who is definitely career driven, powerful and independent.

Although Vogue’s
classic take on fashion and style is widely recognisable, the magazine differs
in various countries. For example, the British Vogue cover above juxtaposes
with Japanese Vogue in terms of fashion style, choice of model, makeup style
and the overall feel. British Vogue’s February issue, featuring Jourdan Dunn is
clean, fresh and brings an essence of spring to highlight new fashion lines as
winter comes to a close. The image is soft, fresh and approachable whereas
Vogue’s Japanese cover is edgy, strong and daring and the target audience for
this cover seems younger than the other three due to its bold edgy style.
Vogue Magazine features not only high end fashions and accessories but also features sophisticated articles and interviews aimed at the successful woman. Articles are inspiring women to do well in business and tell of success stories as well as telling women how to dress appropriately to climb the career ladder. After browsing through the magazine, you can see that the classy stiletto's and practical pumps are aimed at the hard working and powerful woman. Below are example's of articles and fashion items designed for the powerful working woman, sourced at West Thames Library.
