Oribe Canales- Hairstylist

Oribe Canales- Hairstylist

Oribe Canales is one of the most sought after hairstylists in the fashion industry. For over thirty years he has worked on editorial and advertisg campaigns alongside world class photographers, such as Irving Penn and designers such as Gianni Versace and Karl Lagerfeld. He has worked alongside makeup artists such as Pat McGrath and the iconic Kevyn Aucoin.

He began his career working as an assistant in a hair salon. His big break came in the form of Carlyne Cerf from Elle, who he met while working as an assistant for GQ. His collaboration with photographer Stephen Meisel saw him shoot to fame within the fashion industry. He has since been described as the creator of the supermodel due to his volumous high fashion hairstyles.

Oribe Canales is my favourite hair stylist because to me, he is the ultimate creator of BIG glamourous hair. He creates such over the top yet wearable and beautiful hair that oozes femininity, confidence and sex appeal. He is in stark contrast to hair stylists such as Guido Palau, who create eccentric and extremely modern (and usually unwearable) high fashion hairstyles but Oribe’s classic feminine hairstyles are timeless.

My favourite hair style by Oribe was featured in Vogue Italia in February 2011. The feature was 'I Want Candy'. The makeup stylist was Pat McGrath and the photographer was Steven Meisel. The model featured is Candice Swanepoel.

This image appealed to me most because the hair is so big and glam. The shape, along with the gold and orange tones are fun and bright, however, the hair is also quite powerful and strong- quite like a lion. The large soft curls are glamorous and feminine and complements the bold jewelry and dress colour, while still being sexy and womanly, rather than girly. This look is perfect for Vogue due to the femininity and strength in the hair and mainly because it is a timeless look with an edge. If I were to recreate this particular hairstyle, I would use clip in hair extensions for added length and volume, blow dry the hair with big rollers using texturizing products such as mouse and root lifter and make good use of my postiche brush to back brush the hair.
